The German Hunting Federation reports the number of wild hogs killed during the 2008/2009 hunting season was over twice the rate of the previous year.
Although this may seem a bonus for diners who enjoy pig meat, there's a problem. Pigs love to eat mushrooms and truffles, and these plants are particularly efficient at absorbing radioactivity left over from the exploded Chernobyl nuclear reactor.
To prevent contaminated meat from entering the food supply, the German government buys the contaminated meat from hunters.
Experts predict the problem shall continue for decades in to the future.
