You Need To Keep Your Body Hydrated While You're Hiking

If you're someone who's ever been on a health kick, you probably already realize that drinking the recommended eight 8-oz. glasses of water each day can seem like a lot. However, that's only an adequate amount for someone who leads a fairly sedentary life. The more time you spend in active pursuits, the more water your body will need, and the more emergency water treatment you will find it necessary to perform. Couple the fact that when you exercise you sweat and respire more fluids out of your body with any external heat conditions, and you're talking about needing a substantial water intake. Although hiking doesn't seem to be all that strenuous, you still expend a lot of fluid while you're participating in it. So how much water should you drink while you're hiking?

There's a reason that our bodies are made up of two-thirds water, and that's because we require that much in order to keep all of our systems running properly. Would you believe that as much as three quarters of your brain is water? It's a number that's hard to comprehend when something that appears so solid is really mostly water, but it's true.

Without water, the nutrients and oxygen your body requires will not get transported throughout your system. Your food won't get changed into energy, and your vital organs won't have the cushioning that water provides them. Finally, all the muscles that you'll be using, which are 75% made of water, won't be getting the fluid they need to continue to operate as you want them to. Obviously, drinking plenty of water while hiking is a necessity, but how much should you drink?

You can't rely on thirst alone to tell you when you need a drink. Any time you plan to exercise strenuously for a prolonged period of time, you need to plan to drink at least 20 oz. of water before you begin. While you're hiking, you need at least 5-12 oz. every 15 minutes and more if you are hiking in warm temperatures. Although a nice cold drink might sound appealing when you get hot while hiking, it isn't the best idea, because cold water isn't going to remain in your body nearly as long.

You should also take along emergency water treatment equipment, because there's no way you'll be able to carry all the water you will need with you.

Another fact you need to know is that during any prolonged activity when the weather is hot, a drop of 2% of the water in your body is enough to affect the way your body gets rid of the heat and the circulation of your blood. So keep yourself hydrated, and your body will thank you for it.
