If you are a romantic, you are always looking for ways to fan the flame of romance, whether it is with your special friend, your new spouse, or your mate of many years. Hiking can be a great romantic outing that renews that 'Loving Feeling'.
Routine and boredom are death to a relationship. Many couples go days, weeks, and sometime years stuck in the same old routine, nothing changes, and the relationship grows stagnant. Everyone has a deep seated desire to be in a warm loving relationship that is constantly being refreshed and renewed, and it's this desire for intimacy in the setting of stagnicity that breeds discontent, affairs, and divorce.
There are many ways to renew romance in a relationship like a walk in the park, an unexpected gift, spending the afternoon together shopping (that's right guys), go to a museum, attend a Christmas play in the city, and a romantic's list goes on and on. If your list is short, then this article is sure to help your relationship and maybe even save your marriage.
A hike can be a grueling, miserable experience creating stress and straining a relationship, or it can be a time of intimacy, enjoyment, and pleasure, it all depends upon the circumstances. So in making a hike a romantic outing, you need to control as many variables as possible. For example, watch the weather and if the forecast calls for rain, then simply reschedule the hike as opposed to breaking out the rain gear and hiking on muddy trails, shivering uncontrollably, and picking at each other in misery. Control the destination of the hike. Don't pick a rugged hike with a 3,000 foot gain in elevation. Pick a nicer hike with only a small 500 foot gain in elevation that has meadows, wild flowers, and where the streams have bridges. Don't make your wife forge a river! That's not romantic. Plan the distance of the hike so that you can take your time and rest when needed. The idea isn't to see how far you can go, it's to enjoy all of the distance that you decide to go. Stay close together! That's important, not because of the fear of one of you getting lost. It's important so you can talk (right again guys, talk). Comment on how pretty the flowers are, the odd shape of a tree, the distinctive shape of a cloud, and watch out for wildlife. Reminisce about prior dates that stand out in your memory. Lie down in a grove of aspen trees and look up at the blue sky with the clouds passing by. Look out over the valley; look at the next mountain range on the other side of the valley as you sit hand in hand on a rock outcropping. I hope you're getting the idea. Slow down, pay attention to your companion.
The key to making a hike a romantic outing doesn't have anything to do with the hike, but has everything to do with interacting with who is hiking with you. And that's a little odd to me, because a year later one of you will comment about that often remembered hike date. And the comment will not be referencing the nice talk, the view, holding hands, or the little nap we had in the aspen grove. The comment will be about the great hike we went on and let's do it again.
