Dehydrated Food Review - Avoid The Bland And Eat The Tasty Ones On Your Next Backpacking Trip
We like to blend fresh ingredients for cooking with some dehydrated meals when we're on a backpacking trip. But not all dehydrated meals are worth eating. Below is our review of which meals we find tasty and which ones should be left on the store shelf.
Backpacking food doesn't always mean it has to be dehydrated food but dehydrated meals are lightweight, quick and easy to prepare. And some freeze dried meals are quite tasty.
There are several companies out there making food for hikers and backpackers and we have not tried them all. These are the ones we do like and the ones we don't:
Natural High - Raspberry granola with milk. We really didn't like this at all. We switched to regular oatmeal you buy in individual packets at the grocery store. Much better in our opinion and just as easy to prepare.
But, we have tried their main entrees and really liked them a lot! Especially their meat free entrees. Well worth trying. And their chocolate fudge mousse is very yummy and didn't taste like backpacking food at all.
AlpineAire Foods - We've tried a variety of their meal ideas and they are edible but we're not crazy about them. I don't recall their lids being resealable either which I find important after you pour in the hot water.
Backpacker's Pantry - We've tried many, many types of their meals and never liked any of them. I personally think there are much better backpacking foods out there.
Mountain House - My husband didn't mind their meat dinners but added quite a bit of salt and pepper to his for flavour.
Mary Jane's Farm - We've only tried one or two of these ones and they weren't bad but they don't have resealable tops and after you pour in the hot water they need to sit and absorb. That is one thing I wish they would add to their packaging.
Outdoor Gourmet - We really like all the backpacking foods we've tried from this company. I think they do a great job of creating delicious meals. The garlic shrimp pasta they make has lots of shrimp and we've actually bought this one a few times because we like it so much.
Richmoor - We brought up some of their vegetable sides and they weren't very good. Also, it's hard for the veggies to absorb the hot water when the top doesn't seal. The instructions call to fold over the top but it doesn't work very well.
Including some dehydrated meals into your backpacking cooking plan is a handy way to go. Check out our review and others before investing in your next freeze dried meal, you'll enjoy better results if you do!
