One of the most effective techniques that can be employed when fishing in rivers and streams is known as "drifting a worm" and in this article I will explain how to drift a worm and make it appealing to fish.
I have been drifting worms for more than two decades and at the end of the day this particular fishing technique has become my favorite way to catch fish. I have caught many different species of fish from all the main species of freshwater trout to small mouthed bass and even walleye by drifting worms and there is no doubt that the technique is an extremely effective one.
The first thing to consider when learning how to drift a worm is the type of gear that will be employed. Depending on the water flow and depth in the river or stream that you are fishing the length of your rod will vary, but the one thing that all rods and reels have in common when drifting worms is that their action be ultralight. Using an ultralight rod and reel is a must anytime that your are drifting worms. This provides you with much more "feel" making it easier to determine the difference between the bottom and a bite from a fish.
When learning how to drift a worm the kind of worm that you use is also important. There are two kinds of worms that are suitable to use when drifting worms; live or synthetic. Live worms come in the form of a night crawlers, mini night crawlers, or a red worms. The synthetic worms that are suitable to use when drifting worms come in the form of Berkley trout worms or Gulp extruded night crawlers. All of the aforementioned types of worms are suitable for drifting worms and they all seem to work quite well.
The next (and probably most important) factor when learning how to drift a worm is the way in which your worm is rigged. You always want your worm to appear as natural as possible to the fish that you are attempting to catch, which means that the worm must be rigged in an outstretched manner. By rigging your worm so that the worm is outstretched the way that a worm naturally is, that worm becomes that much more appealing to fish and therefore much more effective.
The technique that is used when drifting worms is referred to as drift fishing and it involves casting out and allowing the live worm to drift naturally with the current of the river of stream that you are fishing. The goal when drifting worms is to have the worm bounce along the bottom of the river or stream as is drifts. By doing this the offering looks completely natural to the fish that you are attempting to catch. Drift fishing is the way to go about drifting worms and is one of the most effective fishing techniques that you will ever come across.
