Copenhagen Credibility Crisis?
Thousands of world leaders and environmental activists are now assembled in Copenhagen to discuss climate change. Why?
It's December 2009, and thousands of world leaders and environmental activists have flown to Copenhagen Sweden to attend a historic climate change conference.
We're wondering if any of these leading experts have calculated how much carbon has been pumped in to the atmosphere by all these flights to Copenhagen.
The irony is painful, and worse, almost invisible. Few if any of very many media stories about the glamorous Copenhagen gathering seem prepared to ask...
What's wrong with video conferencing?
Why is it necessary to fly thousands of people around the planet in order to have a conference?
Why is a face to face in the flesh meeting so important, when it seems the very same communication could more easily be conducted over the Net?
For the cost of their plane tickets, each of the attendees could have been provided with a brand new computer set up specifically for video conferencing.
I must admit to some discouragement. If the world's leading climate change experts can't ask these practical common sense questions, it seems fair to wonder if there's really any hope of successfully conquering climate change.
The lesson of Copenhagen seems to be, we're ready to talk the talk, but not walk the walk.
Will lots of carbon producing hot air at Copenhagen really help cool the planet?
