Nasa Uses Drones To Study Lighting In Hurricanes
NASA scientists have equipped remote controlled drone airplanes with equipment to study lightning in hurricanes.
Typically, hurricane researchers will fly planes in to the hurricane for only 10 or 15 minutes. This has made studying the patterns within a developing hurricane challenging.
In a new effort, NASA is installing a Lightning Instrument Package on remotely piloted Global Hawk airplane. This plane will be able to stay with the hurricane for 30 hours, providing a much more comprehensive view of lightning patterns within developing hurricanes.
Scientists refer to this new ability as "...the difference between a single photograph and a full-length movie."
One of the goals is to study the relationship between lightning and hurricane intensity, in an attempt to improve forecasts.
